Maidenhead local politician, freemason and general bigwig. When FH was feeling particularly depressed over his situation at the Fortnightly Review he went on a holiday to Maidenhead, where Grenfell taught him to punt. Their friendship ended over FH's (anti-British) views of the Boer war.

Grenfell's son, Julian, who was killed in the First World War, wrote a much anthologised poem Into Battle, first published just after he died.
