Writer, one of the proprietors of the
Spectator. FH describes how, not long arrived in London, he came unannounced into Hutton's office and persuaded Hutton to give him some books to review, largely through the boldness of his manner. FH, after having researched Hutton's own work at the British Library and finding him a "very small entity, a gentle-pious spirit, intensely religious", wrote reviews carefully designed to appeal to Hutton's prejudices, thereby winning himself a steady stream of work from the
Spectator, his first job as a journalist.
