But isn't it worth looking into the possibility that much of this was translated from a foreign language, or several foreign sources? E.g., try this in German: "So our home feeling and our stranger feeling depend altogether upon the property of place." Much mediocre writing in English was the result of hackwork translation. Still, I confess that Corey/Baldwin may have had certain endogenous powers and properties of pejoration, even in his/her native language.

I wouldn't trust the information in this book, Ned. A one-woman wikipedia.

But what a beautiful binding and great illustrations! The children it was written for had not been corrupted by the Boob Toob and did not mind blocks of text - I read Dicken's PICKWICK PAPERS before I was 12, and before I ever saw a TV. And I learned something from just your excerpts - I hadn't known that Galvani's invalid wife initiated the frog-legs experiments, or that salt would also cause such a reaction.

Thank you so much for this dizzying read ! i am beguiled by her discursive style. the fascinating way she hooks that Spoonbill and its musical basket and reels it into relevancy to cookery is worthy of the alchemy Dickens worked spinning Seymour's sporting sketches into the golden pages of Pickwick.

If you think this is boring, then I suggest you get a copy of Birth Control is Sinful in the Christian Marriages and also Robbing God of Priesthood Children!! It makes logarithmic tables seem positively thrilling by comparison.

Is this poorer written or more boring that the newsletters from the funeral supply business? I suggest a vote-in contest with a winner picked at random from the most insipid responses.
