Historian and essayist. A hero of FH's youth, FH was always proud that they had met and conversed, and that Carlyle gave him a letter of introduction to his friend Froude.

The great Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges argues convincingly in an essay reprinted in The Total Library (published in the US as Selected Non-Fictions) that Carlyle's views foreshadowed Nazism.
