Gordon Beck from Olympia WA & Antibes F

Submitted by Alfred Armstrong on
I was first interested in Frank Harris when I took a graduate seminar from Prof. Shattuck at the U.of Illinois in 1955 when I was finishing my doctorate. He gave two witty lectures on three Irishmen writers: Bernard Shaw 1854, Oscar Wilde & Frank Harris, both 1856. My interest was piqued further when I moved my family to Lawrence, Kansas where I taught theatre & drama at the University of Kansas 1957-65. Gossip was still being bruited about Harris and his sexual encounters with local women. One, Kate Stephens, daughter of a highly respected county judge in Lawrence. She wrote some tracts decrying Harris and in 1929 she published a book `Lies and Libels of Frank Harris' published by the Antigone Press. I am retired and my wife and I spend about five months near Nice on the French Riviera and are members of the British- American Library in the basement of the Holy Trinity Church. Next door to the manse there is a professional office building built near the turn of the century. There is a prominent plaque on the entrance: Frank Harris 1856-1931 Irlandais, Journaliste, Ecrivain // Hote Fidele de la Cote d'Azur // Est Mort dans Cette Maison
