Im sooooo. glad I found this online. Back in the 70s I worked in Surrey County Library HQ, in book supply. Very rarely was a book purchased for every branch but this book was outstanding in that there were so many copies to be processed. Intrigued, myself and another girl started to read it and were convulsed with laughter. We thought it was a hoax...but no..it wasnt. I think the book should be read in the tone of voice of Mr. Pither ( Michael Palin) of the Bicycling Tour of North Cornwall sketch from the Monty Python oeuvre. That may seem unkind...but well...the fact I remember
it from all those years ago says it all. Especially the chapter Aubtie Ethel and the Doodlebug.

Having completed the wheel change, the young lady gratefully suggested that I should return to her flat in Croydon for coffee. I was not a coffee drinker — my one object was to reach home — I thanked her for the invitation which I declined. A master of dry wit, or clueless stooge? I can't decisively conclude. I find those two sentences endlessly amusing, though.
