Died

Forenames
Andrew Cecil
Surname
Bradley

Professor of Poetry at Oxford University. Bradley's Shakespearean Tragedy is still regarded as an important work of Shakespeare criticism.

Bradley angered FH by simultaneously criticising FH's Shakespeare book, while, in FH's view, lifting ideas from it and claiming them as his own.

Both Bradley and FH had reacted to the previous generation of Shakespeare criticism, which was very academic in tone. But FH went rather too far in his theory that Shakespeare had written his own life into the plays, and that he, FH, had the key to decode it.
