Parodist and librettist. Best known for the 'Savoy Operas', for which he wrote the words to Arthur Sullivan's music. FH found him witty, but not deep. He quotes one memorable line of Gilbert's about Beerbohm Tree's notoriously bad Hamlet: 'I don't think his Hamlet is so bad: it's funny but not vulgar.'
